class="zpheading zpheading-align-center " data-editor="true">Recognizing Employees to Increase Productivity

It is now mid-January. Most businesses have taken the time to review their numbers and see where they want to go. The ones who want to grow this coming year have probably put into place an action plan.

The one element missing from most of this reflection and planning is employee recognition.

An employee recognition plan is critical if you want to grow or even maintain your current business. Each company depends on the productivity of their employees. All employees want to feel appreciated and valued. The best way to do this is with a recognition program,

To create a recognition program, you need to set goals – not just sales goals but general productivity goals. Reward cost savings, above and beyond customer service, even extra effort, and of course sales.

Next decide how frequently you will recognize and/or reward – monthly, quarterly or annually depending on your business

The numbers speak volumes about the impact of recognition programs. According to Gallup, only 1 in 3 workers in the U.S. strongly agree that they received recognition or praise for doing good work in the past seven days. This oversight is costly – companies with effective recognition programs have 31% lower voluntary turnover rates.

Consider these compelling statistics:

Organizations with recognition programs see a 31% increase in employee productivity

69% of employees say they would work harder if they felt their efforts were better appreciated

Companies with recognition programs report a 23% increase in profitability

92% of workers are more likely to repeat actions they're recognized for

When implementing your recognition program, remember that timing matters. While 80% of organizations have recognition programs, only 31% of them deliver recognition in a timely manner. Immediate recognition has the strongest impact on employee motivation and engagement.

Your budget doesn't need to be enormous – studies show that non-monetary recognition can be just as effective as financial rewards. Simple gestures like public acknowledgment, additional responsibilities, or flexible working arrangements can significantly boost morale and productivity.

Here are some key elements to include in your recognition program:

Clear criteria for recognition

Multiple categories of achievement

Peer-to-peer recognition opportunities

Regular communication about the program

Consistent evaluation and adjustment

Remember that recognition isn't one-size-fits-all. Different generations and personality types respond to different forms of recognition. Gen Z and Millennials tend to prefer immediate, frequent recognition, while Baby Boomers often value formal, traditional recognition methods.

The ROI of recognition programs is clear: companies investing in employee recognition report seeing an average return of $7 for every $1 spent. This return comes through increased productivity, reduced turnover, and improved customer satisfaction scores.

As you move forward with your business plans this year, make employee recognition a cornerstone of your strategy. The most successful companies understand that their greatest asset is their people, and showing appreciation is key to unlocking their full potential. Start small if necessary, but start now – your business results will reflect the investment you make in recognizing your team's contributions.

Remember, a well-executed recognition program isn't just a nice-to-have – it's a strategic imperative for business growth and sustainability in today's competitive marketplace.

Locate where they go and where you will find them and then focus your efforts there. I truly hope that the idea of social selling as the magic bullet is over. Now we just have to remind people that AI is not the magic bullet either.

Here is the original post:

Many years into the social selling concept, one of the most often heard questions still posed to Social Media trainers, strategists and agencies is “Do I have to be everywhere?”. While many agencies and consultants try to get their clients to have a presence everywhere, I think that is a big mistake, unless, of course, your audience is everywhere.

Before you jump in and create more profiles than you will ever be able to manage on your own, stop, look, listen and figure out where your target audience can be found.

To do this takes the same skills as any other networking activities. You don’t show up at every networking function in a fifty mile radius of your office, regardless of the hour. If you did you would never be able to get any work done and service all of those people you are meeting, never mind having time to create real relationships that can be a source of referrals for you in growing your business.

Instead of showing up everywhere, you probably look at who will be attending any particular function. You will also check who belongs to the sponsoring organization. The same is true online. If you are in the logistics business you are not likely to attend a conference for trust and estate attorneys.

Similarly online you should not be spending time on a forum for tax questions, if you are in manufacturing. Many people are under the mistaken notion that online is different, after all both of those groups of people are on LinkedIn so you should be too. That is true, both groups of people are on LinkedIn, but for the most part they are not reading and posting to the same groups on LinkedIn.

To find your audience you first have to define them.

After you have put pen to paper and written down five demographic characteristics of your target audience you can begin to research where they are really spending their time online.

Remember, there are people behind those business profiles, just like there are people on the other end of the phone. That does not mean that the marketing manager who spends her time on Pinterest when she gets home ever looks at it during working hours. Verify where your audience is spending time focused on the service or product that you provide and then create a true interactive presence there.

Even all of these years later, unfortunately, many have taken to the internet and a Google Images search. While this might show you a plethora of ideas and even spark your creativity, many if not most of those images are owned by others and commercial use, is certainly not allowed, especially without attribution.

Back in 2012, when things were still a bit less visual, Jeff Bullas wrote a piece in where he stated that “Articles with images get 94% more total views” (you can read the whole article here). Today how much more true that must be.

So that brings us back to the dilemma of what do we do to have a steady stream of images. From both a marketing point of view, as well as a legal ease view, best is to take your own photos or pay to have images created especially for you. Next would be to locate images that are in the Public Domain and use those.

Today there are many additional resources such as free plans from Canva where you have access to limited images with no fee. Better is to buy the annual plan and have a larger selection of images. You can use these images for your social media, fliers, brochures and more. Even more importantly you can use those images legally when you want a full color photo to print on your promotional product.

If you want to save yourself the hassle of searching for images, we have a whole department dedicated to helping you create the perfect image to print. We can create custom calendars, full color images for things like luggage tags and tote bags and much more. All of the images that we use are meant for commercial use so you will never be violating anyone else's copyright.

This is also why we will not take a project where a sports team logo is involved unless you have written permission for use.

Remember, you are not selling at these networking groups, you are creating relationships. Those relationships are what will, over time, create your stream of leads.

In creating those relationships be open minded, you really don't know who will know the person that will skyrocket your business to the next level. Don't assume that because you do not need that person's services that it is not worth getting to know them. I do not at this very moment need title insurance, but I know a great networker who is in the title insurance business and he networks with one of my ideal target markets. You get the idea. This brings me to my second tip.

2. Remember it is not about you. No one really cares what you do, they want to know what is in it for them. To be successful as a networker you need to make it about the other person - what can you do for them. There are many things that you can do for someone beyond buying their product or service. In fact, if you become a customer or client you are only one, but if you introduce your networking contact to many people who can use their services or products you have now become a vital part of your contact's business-lead funnel.

Among the many things that you can do to keep it about the other person besides introductions, is to send them links to articles of value to them and their business. By sending them the information you are adding value to the relationship.

All of my final three tips revolve around one of the most important parts to successful networking - a follow-up system. Many people attend networking events or receive introductions and then they never follow-up. Without following up it is almost as if you never met that person. Certainly you cannot expect to receive referrals from them.

3. Follow-up by Snail Mail. When you meet someone at a networking event or even through an introduction take a few minutes to drop that person a personal note, (of course they have to have an address on their business card). Some networking experts like Bob Burg recommend a specific format note card. I have read from others like Ivan Misner that they suggest Send Out Cards, something that I personally do not like, but it is a solution.

As for me, I have found that writing a quick note on the top sheet of a 3 x 4 25 sheet Post-it note pad and inserting that into an envelope as if it were a note card, is the most effective. I have been doing this for years, and I almost always get some kind of response. It may not be immediate, but it is always remembered. It is so effective that I have even gotten orders from recipients of my notes for the same Post-it pads.

If they do not have an address on their business cards then you can always follow up with an email. I always try to do a little bit of detective work first so that if there is an address to be found, I use it. If I cannot hunt down an address than an email will do the trick and further the conversation.

4. Follow-up by connecting on LinkedIn. In today's online digital world you can add staying in touch by connecting on LinkedIn to your tool bag. This is a great way to share content and maintain a connection. By using LinkedIn properly, you can use the information that you find there to make consistent contact of value. You will know when the person changes jobs - a chance to congratulate or help them find a new oneor both. You can discover when they are completing a large project or looking for information. All of these pieces of knowledge can give you opportunities to stay in touch.

5. Follow-up over coffee. This coffee follow up can be in person or virtual, but the more of them that you have the more you will broaden your connections and the sooner you will have added to your own lead funnel.

Of course to create this follow up system, you need to have a tool for tracking all of these leads and networking connections. It is also good to have a way of tracking the introductions that you are going to make and other tasks for better networking.

For larger companies there are many options such as Salesforce.com, Pipedrive, ZOHO and more, but for the small business owner, and even senior level executive at Fortune 100's while not ideal, you can even use an Excel spreadsheet.

By choosing the right networking opportunities and following up consistently, you will find success in creating a stream of leads.

Now let’s look at what it takes to be successful in your networking so that it grows your business and increases your revenue.

The first step to networking success is to have a plan.Who do you want to meet and where do you think you will find that type of person? Do your research. Without research you will not have networking success. Find the places that your target audience (your customers OR good referral sources) hangs out and check out the events that are held. Which events would you enjoy most? Sign up for those.

After you have located the events and signed up be sure you have a follow up plan in place. Follow up is certainly not just stuffing the business cards into a box in your drawer and it is also not just one email after the event. To follow up for success it takes a consistent plan.

To create that consistent plan you need to have a strategy in place the covers at least one year, yes, a full year.

The first six weeks should be the bulk of the plan, and then there should be one or two touch points per month for the rest of the year.

For example, When I come back from an event, I write a note that I mail snail mail to each of the people that I met. Sometimes it takes research to find their address as it is not on their business card and sometimes I can not find an address, those people where I have no address usually end up falling by the wayside.

The next step is to reach out an connect on Social Media. LinkedIn is the correct choice for most situations.

Once you are connected on LinkedIn, interact with their posts. This helps create a relationship. The third category might be up to $25,000 and you get the idea of course work with numbers that make sense for your business. Now that you have your subcategories, figure out the budget for each category. When figuring out the budget keep in mind any legal, regulatory, ethical and tax deduction implications.

Once you have a budget and the approximate number of recipients in each category you can begin to choose the gifts and once the gifts are chosen the packaging.

Another way to create sub-lists is to break down the list by job title and demographics. This method enables you to choose less generic gifts. This is true because you know more about the person you are gifting. For example most women in the Northeast are not going to get excited over a Real Tree Cap. For that matter , most men in the Northeast aren't going to be too excited either. On the other hand give out real tree caps in parts of the Southeast and you have a winner - Texas you are better giving out Mossy Oak. For all of you wondering what Real Tree and Mossy Oak even are, that is the point. They are camophlage patterns that hunters wear. I took such an extreme example because it makes the issue crystal clear - you need to match the gifts to the recipients. You also need to match the dollars spent to a sales level or even potential sales level.

That is why my favorite method of creating sub-lists is to use the demographics first and then overlay the sales categories. Now you know exactly who you are gifting, how many in each category. Armed with this information and your budget you can hand everything off to a professional and get back to work generating additional revenue for your company.

Want to free up all that time? Call us at 212-812-1438 and let us take over.

They suggested that we follow the information in the book to market their new product. Even though I was skeptical I figured that if this was what the client wanted I had better read the book. I was on the first page when I discovered the first problem. The author clearly did not know the difference between marketing and advertising.

In describing marketing before the internet age they declared that there were three primary ways to market – print, tv and radio. Unfortunately, the author’s definition of marketing is really a description of three advertising channels that were available in the pre-internet era. It is not a description of marketing. This got me thinking about how many other people confuse marketing and advertising. I decided that it is time for some basic definitions.

Marketing is the definition of Product, Place, Price and Promotion, commonly called the 4 Ps. In other words, you first define your product. What it is. What benefit it provides. Who might be interested in it, and who you are going to target it to.

With your product defined it is time to determine what the price should be.

Then place is decided. Where and through which channels of distribution, will you sell your product.

Lastly, you determine your promotion.

It is during the process of determining your promotion that you will also define your general advertising campaign. Where is your target audience reachable, on traditional offline channels such as TV, radio, print, (print being newspapers, and magazines) and billboards and additional methods such as direct mail and promotional products, and where they can be found online. The online options include social media, banner ads on websites, pay-per-click, targeted forums and more.

Advertising, on the other hand is the conveyance of the Promotion message defined in the marketing process. Print, TV and Radio, are still three possible channels for delivering that advertising message, but they are not three ways to market.

Without being clear on the distinction between the two functions of marketing and advertising it is highly probable that the wrong message is being delivered to the wrong people at the wrong time and that the wrong channels are being used.

Once you are clear on your 4 P’s you will greatly increase the success of any advertising effort.

Now let's look at the differences between marketing and sales. Many people make the distinction by saying that marketing talks to many and sales is one-on-one conversations. While that can be true it is not the full distinction. A more important distinction is that marketing should serve the organizational function where they clearly state the solution that the company product or service delivers and they incorporate that information into materials that can be shared with the buying public through the many promotional channels as described above. Sales on the other hand should be looking at each potential buyer and honing in on the specific value that the solution provides that will be of greatest benefit to the potential buyer. One more important distinction - marketing provides infromation. Sales asks people directly to buy, sign on the dotted line etc. The final difference between marketing and sales, a conversation versus a broadcast. Marketing broadcasts their information while sales should be picking up the phone and having conversations. They can also have conversations in a variety of other places such as online, trade shows and conferences and networking events.

By understanding the differences, each department can function more smoothly and collaborate better.
